Women's Soccer Blanks Wagner 5-0 in Home Opener

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team opened the home portion of its schedule emphatically Thursday evening as the Hawks downed Wagner 5-0 at Finnesey Field. Saint Joseph's wasted little time finding the back of the net as senior forward Ali Wean found a wide open Nancy Cook down the middle of the field. Going one-on-one versus Wagner goalkeeper Ashley Wilson, Cook buried the ball to the back left side to put the Hawks up 1-0 at 6:31. Leading 1-0, the Hawks added a pair of goals within two minutes of each other to open a 3-0 advantage. Wean put Saint Joseph's up two in the 34th minute as Cook took a centering pass from classmate Megan Schutt and found an open Wean 10 yards out. Wean took the pass and found the back of the right netting to put SJU up 2-0. Sophomore Ashley Bugnar extended the lead to 3-0, taking a pass from senior Kaiti McCaffery off a free kick and finding the back of the net. Both teams played back and forth over the opening 20 minutes of the second half, but Schutt added to the Hawks' lead in the 72nd minute, scoring from eight yards out off a pass from sophomore Amanda Morrell. Freshman Danielle Debernardo added the final tally of the night off a redirect of McCaffery's indirect kick at 82:36. For the game, Saint Joseph's out shot the Seahawks 17-3, with the Hawks sophomore goalkeeper Jen Kuhn making two saves for the shutout. At the other end, Wilson made four saves in the loss.
Individually, Cook, Wean, and Schutt each added three points apiece with a goal and an assist, while Bugnar and DeBernardo each were credited two points for their individual goals. With her two assists, McCaffery moved into a tie for second all-time in SJU history with 11 for her career. At the other end, Jenn Schweizer and Diane Ganterhammer each registered a shot on net for Wagner. With the win, the Hawks improve to 1-1-0 on the season, while Wagner falls to 0-1-0 The Hawks return to action Saturday, September 2, at St. John's. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. |
