About The Jesuit Cannonball Trophy
In 1521 Saint Ignatius Loyola had his right leg shattered by a cannonball in an attept to defend the Spanish border fortress of Pamplona against French artillery. His French captors, impressed by Ignatius' courage, carried him to his family's home at Loyola. During his convalescence Ignatius read the only books that were available to him -religious books n Christ and the lives of the saints. These books and the isolation of the recovery period brought about his conversion that led to the founding of the Jesuits. In effect, this cannonball was the impetus for the Jesuit order.
The Cannonball Trophy serves as a reminder that all good things start with pain. The glory of winning is only possible by withstanding the mental and physical pain of the 2000m race course. The trophy is awarded to the school with the highest combined points from today's racing. The Cannonball Trophy is a traveling trophy which the winner returns each year. The winning team receives a small cannonball that is theirs to keep as a reminder on their championship performance. |
