Women's Rowing Has Strong Start to Year at Navy Day
Oct. 13, 2009
PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team posted some solid early-season results at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River, entering five events and finishing among the top four teams in four of the races. The freshmen had a particularly good day finishing second (by less than one second) and 9th in the Freshman Eight. "They showed tremendous progress over the last week and a half and we are really proud of both boats," said coach Gerry Quinlan. The Varsity 4 turned in a good race, but final results are still pending. Members of the 2V8 and V8 started the day early in three doubles and finished third, fourth and seventh, respectively. "Our sculling has really been improving over the season and it is helping our sweep rowing tremendously," said Quinlan. The 2nd Varsity 8 finished a strong fourth, five one-hundredths of a second behind third place. The Varsity 8 also finished fourth in its outing. "We are excited about our results, mainly that we are within striking distance of leading the pack so early in the season. We have a lot of work to do and some time to do it, so we are sure we are moving in the right direction. We will mix the boats up a bit for the Head of the Schuylkill and continue to push for our Fall goals," said Quinlan.
