WOMEN'S ROWING OPENS SEASON WITH SOLID EFFORT AT JESUIT INVITE

PHILADELPHIA (3/21/04) The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team had a great opening day performance against tough competition at the Jesuit Invitational raced on the Cooper River. Boston College swept the women's events with SJU placing second in all of the Eights competition.

The V8 of coxswain Rachel Fonorow, Laura Hill, Brigid Morrison, Martha Limbach, Lauren Gallagher, Marci Fonorow, Mary Jameson, Jenn Linck, Meg Nechanicky turned in an inspired race. SJU and BC set themselves apart from the pack early leaving Holy Cross, Georgetown, and Loyola open water behind. The crews were bowball to bowball with BC for 1700 meters fighting stroke for stroke. BC made their move but the Hawks' counter fell short.

On Sunday, SJU swept Lehigh for the second straight year in duel competition. Conditions were difficult with a steady 15mph wind, gusting to 25mph. But the Hawks displayed a lot of grit to push through the 2000m course, besting Lehigh in all three events.

Next up for the Hawks is the Murphy Cup next Saturday on the Schuylkill River.
