WEARY WOMEN'S ROWERS FAIR WELL AT ECAC
CAMDEN, NJ (5/11/03) - After turning in a successful effort at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on Friday and Saturday, the Saint Joseph's women's rowing team took to the water again on Sunday at the ECAC National Collegiate Invitatioal on the Cooper River. Despite being weary from earlier weekend racing, the Hawks had another strong showing sending all four boats to the finals with the Freshman 8 winning gold.
The Frosh 8 placed second to A-10 rival Massachusetts in its qualifying heat, but defeated Main Line foe Villanova in a time of 7:11.43 for the gold medal in a field that also featured Colgate, UMass, Delaware and West Virginia.
The suprise of the day came from the Hawks freshman four, which competed in the Varsity Four event and advanced to the Grand Final. Rowing against more experienaced competition, the Hawks placed fifth (8:26.66) behind Delaware, UMass, Buffalo and Rhode Island, but ahead of Villanova.
Physically exhausted form three days of racing, both the Second Varsity and Varsity 8 boats qualified for the Petite Finals. The Second Varsity (7:43.14) captured its final besting Villanova, Fordham and Army. The V8 (7:13.51), meanwhile was edged by Army for the top slot by less then 0.2 tenths of a second. Colgate and Delaware placed behind St. Joe's.
