WOMEN'S ROWING TAKES FOURTH AT A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

COLLINGSWOOD, NJ (04/26/03) - Saint Joseph's women's rowing head coach Gerry Quinlan was pleased with his team's fourth place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships held on the Cooper River on a rainy Saturday morning. But what had the Hawks' head coach really happy was that 15 of his team's 28 points were scored entirely by freshmen rowers. In all, three SJU freshmen boats, the Novice 8-A and Novice 8-B and the Quad, finished second for the Hawks, helping the team better last year's showing by two places. Rowing in the Quad for SJU, which finished 20 seconds behind UMass, was Emily Martin, Laura Hill, Jenn Linck and Maureen Owston. The Hawks Novice 8-B boat, which trailed the George Washington crew by 4.8 seconds, included coxswain Ashley Waddington, Courtney Cronauer, Erin O'Hanlon, Sam Gitman, Meredith Cormack, Alexia Honig, Rebecca Mills, Jacqueline Weselow and Kate Kennedy. In the closest race of day, GW edged SJU in the Novice 8-A by 0.9 seconds. The Hawk boat was represented by coxswain Kate Parry, Martin, Hill, Christen Scanlon, Meredith Richter, Linck, Owston, Brianna Kearns and Amanda Holland. SJU also received four points with a second place showing in the Lightweight 4, finishing 10 seconds behind Rhode Island. Junior Rachel Fonorow served as coxswain for the Hawk crew which included seniors Stef Smith and Suzanne Phillips, sophomore Allison Vaughn and freshman Liz Daly. The Hawks also picked up five points from its Varsity 8 crew consisting of senior coxswain Amy Platt, juniors Martha Limbach, Mary Jameson, Meg Nechanicky and Jenn Wilson and sophomores Maureen Deeper, Lauren Gallagher, Bernice McPherson and Brigid Morrison. The Varsity 8 placed fifth overall despite clashing oars with Rhode Island at the start of the race as the Hawk boat was pushed into the Ram lane by a heavy wind. SJU had to stop entirely, regroup, and then use a strong push at the end to overtake Dayton by two seconds. The SJU 2nd Varsity 8 of Fonorow, Vaughn, Smith, Phillips, Daly, senior Laurie Sparano, junior Rebecca Celotto, and sophomores Marci Armetta and Caterina Silvestrini also placed fifth, to earn four points. UMass won four of nine races in posting 45 total points to claim its eighth straight A-10 Championship. George Washington and Rhode Island tied for second with 35 points. Saint Joseph's was fourth with 28 points and Dayton finished fifth with 19 points. The Flyers were followed by Fordham (17 points), La Salle (seven points), Temple (six points), and Duquesne (three points). 2003 ATLANTIC 10 WOMEN'S ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP Cooper River Park - Collingswood, NJ April 26 Final Results Overall Team Standings 1.
