WOMEN GARNER THREE MEDALS AT NAVY DAY REGATTA

PHILADELPHIA (10/12/02) - The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team took to the Schuylkill River on Saturday, opening its season at the competitive Navy Day Regatta. Kicking off the year with a bang, three of SJU's six boats captured medals, including the varsity Quad (gold), and both the Freshman and Dad Vail 8s (silver). The Varsity Quad, comprised of freshmen Laura Hill and Maureen Owston, junior Jenn Wilson and senior Laurie Sparano, earned a gold medal, besting second place Temple by almost 2 minutes. The Dad Vail 8 - made up of some JV8 and Freshman 8 oarswomen - also pulled a great race, finishing 2nd in the field of 10, 21 seconds ahead of Temple's first varsity 8. Members of that crew included sophomores Tori Zunino (cox), Alison Vaughan, and Marci Armetta, freshmen Christen Scanlon, Emily Martin, Jenn Linck, Amanda Holland, Samantha Gitman and senior Sarah Banfer. The Freshmen 8s had fantastic races as well, finishing 2nd and 10th out of 20 teams. The 1st Freshman 8, which included Katie Parry (cox), Christen Scanlon, Jenn Linck, Laura Hill, Amanda Holland, Owston, Emily Martin, Samantha Gitman and Brianna Kearns, finished with a time of 14:42 - five seconds behind Penn and 17 seconds ahead of Navy and the rest of the field that included Army, Delaware, Lehigh, Temple and West Virginia. The 2nd Freshman 8 rowed the course with a time of 16:35 ahead of both Temple 8s, both Lehigh 8s, and both West Virginia 8s. Both Freshman 8s passed several boats to make the races very interesting. The Women's Varsity 8 race was a barn burner with the SJU 8 finishing 8th just 10 seconds out off fifth place. The V8 rowed the race in 14:38. The JV eight pulled our best time of the week in a 15:15 finishing 8th of 10 in a tough field led by Rutgers. The women return to the water in two weeks at the Head of the Schuylkill.
