FRESHMEN EIGHT WINS GOLD AT AVAYA CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA

PRINCETON, NJ (5/12/02) - The Saint Joseph's University freshman eight capped off a tremendous weekend by winning the gold medal at the Avaya Championship Regatta. The Hawk second varsity also piciked up a silver medal at the final regatta of the season for SJU. Trailing at the start of the race, SJU battled back to pull even with Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts by the midway point. In the final 30 strokes, the Hawks pushed through UMass, finishing two seconds ahead of the Minutewomen. The freshmen eight consists of coxswain Tori Zunino, Maureen Demer, Brigid Morrison, Caterina Silvestrini, Lauren Gallagher, Bernice McPherson, Alison Vaughan, Claire Lawrence and Megan Kolb.   The second varsity eight closed out its season in fine fashion. The Hawks stayed with eventual winner UMass the entire way, pulling away from the rest of the field, whicg included crews from Villanova, Fairfield and Drexel. The Hawk varsity eight crew put together its best race of the year, battling the entire course until falling to sixth place at the finish. SJU's final crew, the freshmen four, competed in the varsity four event. The only freshmen boat in the race, the Hawks held their own through most of the race before finishinga strong sixth. The Avaya Championship Regatta concludes the 2002 SJU women's rowing season.
