WOMEN'S NOVICE EIGHT TAKES SILVER AT DAD VAIL REGATTA
PHILADELPHIA (5/11/02) - The women's novice eight crew captured the silver medal at the Dad Vail Regatta as Saint Joseph's celebrated a strong day on the Schuykill River on Saturday afternoon. The Hawk crew bested Central Florida by 2.8 seconds and Boston College by 3.8 seconds. On the men's side, the SJU men's lightweight eight fell just short in its medal quest, placing fourth in the final, 2.6 second behind Santa Barbara.
The Hawk freshmen eight, which consists of coxswain Tori Zunino, Maureen Demer, Brigid Morrison, Caterina Silvestrini, Lauren Gallagher, Bernice McPherson, Alison Vaughan, Claire Lawrence and Megan Kolb, was in fourth place when it passed the program's new boathouse, being utilized for the first time. The cheers coming from the Hawks' home inspired the crew to the silver medal.
SJU's second varsity eight won its heat on Friday, and advanecd through the semifinals for a place in the garnd final. It was a tight race from the start with Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts taking a slight lead with crews from Delaware, Purdue, Central Florida and SJU racing just a few seats apart. The Hawks held this grouping all the way through the finish line. SJU rowed a flawless race, but was edged out of the medals by .5 seconds(that's one half of a second), placing fourth in the final.
Placed in a difficult heat, the varsity eight rowed well, but was not able to advance to Saturday's final, although the crew's time would have advanced in any other heat.
The SJU freshman four advanced through the heats to the semifinal. In the semis, the Hawks rowed a nice controlled and aggressive race. We finished fourth just missing advancement to the final by approximately four seats.
