JUNIOR VARSITY WINS GOLD AT MURPHY CUP; VARSITY DOWNS DRAKE ON SUNDAY
PHILADELPHIA (04/21/02) - The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team captured the gold medal in the junior varsity eight at the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River on Saturday and then extracted revenge on Drake in a dual regatta on the Schuylkill on Sunday.
The junior varsity eight pulled out to a full length lead on its nearest competitor by the 700 meter mark and ran away with the race, rowing strong to the finish. The Hawks bested a field of six, with Villanova finishing 15 seconds behind in second place.
The Hawk freshmen four rowed a strong race, going head-to-head with Pittsburgh in the final. SJU led most of the way, but the Panther crew pulled the race out at the end. The freshen eight made the final as well, but after holding second through most of the race, the Hawk crew fell to fourth in the end.
The varsity eight failed to qualify for the final, despite cutting 21 seconds off of their time last week on the Schuylkill. The Hawks lost out to Lehigh, Temple and Drake in the qualifying heat.
On Sunday, SJU extracted its revenge on Drake, as both the Hawks varsity eight and second varsity eight defeated the Midwesterners in a dual race.
The Hawks will next compete at the A-10 Championships on Saturday, April 27 on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ.
