HAWKS COMPETE AT NAVY DAY REGATTA

PHILADELPHIA (10/3/01) - The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team took to the Schuylkill River on Saturday for the Navy Day Regatta. The Hawks' top eight was unable to compete due to an injury, but SJU sent two crews into the water against some tough competition. Leading the way was the splendid effort of the freshmen/novice eight, which placed 8th of 18 in a highly competitive field. The freshman boat led by cox Tori Zunino and rowed by Maureen Demer, Brigid Morrison, Caterina Silvestrini, Lauren Gallagher, Meghan Kolb, Naomi Trout, Kate Harron, and Cristen Cucci completed the course in a time of 19:24, just 24 seconds off the fifth place finisher. "That was an incredible showing since they have only been rowing together for three weeks" stated SJU head coach Gerry Quinlan. "To beat major rowing powers such as Temple and West Virginia is a great start." The Hawks did field a varsity eight boat, and despite being on the water for just the first time together, finished sixth of eighth in their race, besting Delaware and Temple with a time of 17:24. The boat was led by Suzanne Phillips and Jenn Wilson. "It was a good first time effort," stated Quinlan. "We were disappointed that our top boat was unable to compete, but we will wait to show our speed in Boston next Sunday." The Hawks compete at the Head of the Charles Regatta next Sunday (10/21).
