Hawks Place 6th at George Washington Invitational
Washington D.C.(4/14/00) - The team had a great weekend in our
nation's capitol. The Hawks took to the Potomac with some of the best
competition in the country and certainly held their own in all of the
races. The Hawks finished 6th in points in the field of 13, ahead teams
such as Marietta, Princeton, and UMass.
The Women's Varsity 8 had a tough heat with heat winners and next
fastest times advancing. The V8 event consisted of #8 Virginia, #21
UMass, #22 Columbia. SJU faced A10 rivals GW and #22 Columbia in
its heat as well as Wm and Mary. The Hawks rowed a strong heat,
finishing in a solid third behind GW and ahead of Wm. and Mary,
securing a spot in the Petit Final. In the final, SJU squared off against
Georgetown, UMass, and New Hampshire. UMass jumped out on
everyone by about the 500m pole, with Georgetown and SJU going
stroke for stroke -both moving away from New Hampshire. At the 1500
the two Jesuit schools had closed the gap on UMass to about 1 seat of
open water. As SJU approached the finish line they were still going
stroke for stroke with Georgetown. Georgetown took the last stroke and
bested the Hawks by .9 seconds.
The Women's Lightweight 8 raced #2 Princeton, #12 Georgetown, #6
UMass. SJU again dominated A10 rival UMass and kept them from
making the Grand Final. In the Grand Final, Princeton had the best time
of the day with Georgetown second. SJU finished a strong fourth in the
final.
