Hawks Compete at Prestigious Head of the Schuylkill Regatta
Philadelphia (10/29/00) - The St. Joseph's women's rowing team
competed at the prestigious Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday
afternoon. The event, which brought more than 5,000 rowers and 1,250
boats for what is considered the largest one-day regatta in the world.
Seniors Renee Hykel and Becky Riegert led a young heavyweight
eight boat that was right in the middle of the Dad Vail crews in the
Championship Eight final. The Hawks settled for 12th overall, one spot
behind Drexel, but head coach Gerry Quinlan feels the team will only
get faster as the year progresses.
The Lightweight Eight led by seniors Melissa Doyle, Cheryl Maslanek,
Jamie Sabella, Lauren Marvello and Jordan Foster moved on
Villanova in the first mile but let the Wildcats take the seconds back in
the final mile to finish second overall - SJU's best finish of the day. This
crew is primed to continue the Hawks' strong tradition of success in the
lightweight eight division.
The JV 8 boat competed in the Club Championship, placing 31st. This
competition featured many different boats, including some varsity
squads. The Hawk boat added three freshmen this week, which may
have hindered this performance, but help in the future.
SJU placed two freshmen eights on the river, both making their
collegiate debuts. The Hawk boats placed 18th and 19th in the field, a
solid showing for first time efforts.
Next up is the Atlantic 10 Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday, November
11. SJU is co-hosting the event which will run from 10:30 am until 12:30
pm.
