Women's Rowing Ready to Defend Dad Vail Crown
May 8, 2007 PHILADELPHIA - It was a year ago that the Saint Joseph's women's rowing team made history, by winning the Varsity 8 at the Dad Vail Regatta. The Hawks will defend that title this weekend on the Schuylkill River at the nation's largest collegiate regatta, on Friday and Saturday, May 11-12, to close out the 2007 season. Last year's win was the first-ever for SJU in the prestigious race. Along with the victory by that boat, the Hawks placed a school-best second place in the women's competition and retained the Bratten Trophy as the top program in the Dad Vails. That Varsity 8 win also earned the Hawks a spot in the Henley Regatta in England. The Varsity 8 enters the regatta seeded third (last year's senior-laden squad was seeded seventh). This year's young Hawk squad has put together a successful season in all of the boats. In the 2007 Regatta, Saint Joseph's will be represented by the Varsity 4, 2nd Varsity 8 and a Freshman 8. "All of our boats are in great position to post wins in the Regatta. Our young team has made great strides this year and has shown signs of greatness all season. We are ready finish out 2007 with victories," said head coach Gerry Quinlan. A total of 119 colleges and universities will face off on the Schuylkill River on Friday and Saturday, May 11-12. Competition begins at 7 a.m. both days. For more information on the Regatta, including parking, along with complete results, click here, or go to www.dadvail.org.
