Hawk Women Show Strength at Head of the Schuylkill

Oct. 31, 2005

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's Women's rowing team finished the 2005 head race season with a spectacular performance at the Head of the Schuylkill. The day was highlighted by the tremendous effort of the Championship 8, Quad and Freshman 8.

The Championship 8 made great improvements this week and the hard work showed during the 4000m race. The crew was aggressive and smooth, finishing a strong fifth in a competitive field -just seven seconds off of first place.

The Quad, consisting of Maureen Owston, Jess Barksy, Hilary Armstrong and Christiana Scollin passed two crews simultaneously in front of the boathouse to finish second in a time of 16:03.

The Freshman Boats had superb performances, finishing 7th and 41st out of 63. The Hawks rowed strong and controlled and had some fun on the river. The 7th place boat had a particularly strong row also passing two crews in front of the boathouse en route to completing the course in 15:04, just six seconds off of third.

The two Club 8s also had strong rows to finish out the head season.

The Hawks return to competition on the Schuylkill at the Frostbite Regatta in two weeks.
