Women's Rowing Turns in Good Showing at Navy Day Regatta

Oct. 12, 2008

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team had an impressive day at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday.

The Hawks boated three Freshmen Eights, four Varsity Doubles, one Varsity Four, a "Dad Vail" Eight, and the College Eight. Coach Gerry Quinlan put in different lineups to give more Hawks the chance to step up.

"We are really proud of how we executed the focus of this past week's practice on race day," said Quinlan. "The weaknesses we identified and targeted this week were overcome as a whole in our race situations today. That is a big step to hold the changes and improvements through the race symptoms such as burning lungs and legs."

The Varsity Four, the Doubles and Freshman Eights led off the morning with the best rows of the week. The Dad Vail Eight and College Eight capped off the afternoon. The Dad Vail Eight held off strong pushes from the Varsity Eights of Villanova and Philadelphia University to finish with the gold medal in a winning time of 16:04. The College Eight had a slow start but once the Hawks got going they passed Temple and Rutgers to finish a strong fourth place with a time of 15:40.
