Varsity 8 Clipped at Bergen Cup

May 1, 2006

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's picked up victories in the Second Varsity 8 and Freshman 8, but the Varsity 8 was clipped at the wire, finishing second in Bergen Cup competition on the Schuylkill River.

Leading the race for 1998 meters, the Varsity 8 came up short by .06 seconds to Temple in its quest for the Kelly Cup. In what was practically a dead heat, SJU was edged in an uncharacteristic finish.

"We have finished all of our races very strong this season. It was uncharacteristic of us not to put this one away, especially when we led at 1000 by 4 seats," related head coach Gerry Quinlan. "Temple rowed an aggressive race and should be commended, but we get two more shots at them this year."

The Second Varsity 8 and Freshman 8s both were victoriuos in their races. The Lighteight 8, Varsity 4 and Freshman 4 put together strong finishes as well.
