Women's Rowing Medals in Six Events to Place Third at Atlantic 10 Championship

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team medaled in six of seven events en route to a third-place finish at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship on the Cooper River. Rhode Island took the team title with UMass finishing second. Alicia Easby-Smith and Liz Sauter earned All-Conference First Team honors while Debbie Bateman was an All-Conference Second Team selection. The Varsity 8 of: Andi Hartfield (cox), Brianne Kammerman, Lauren Sysol, Samm Wilson, Colleen Greway, Liz Sauter, Christina DiSanto, Danielle Brady and Debbie Bateman started off the day in a battle with Rhode Island and UMass for the premier event. With 500m to go the Rams led the Hawks and the Minutewomen by a 4-5 seat. SJU made a strong move to pull through UMass but fell short against URI finishing a strong second. This was the first medal earned by Saint Joseph's in the Varsity 8 event. The Freshman 8 of Clare Burns (cox), Christine Stopyra, Katie Herdmann, Ashley Wollman, Colleen Smith, Deanna Bigford, Juliet Lee, MaryCate Fox, and Angela Acuna had a nail biter as well, trailing UMass by a length with a 1000m to go. SJU made a strong move to pull even with about 750m to go and continued to move through the finish line for the gold.
The 2nd Varsity 8, Quad, and Lightweight 4 earned bronze medals, while the Freshman 4 won silver. The Hawks are back in action Saturday at the Bergen Cup in Philadelphia. |
