HAWKS SQUEAK BY GEORGE WASHINGTON ON SENIOR DAY, 14-13
PHILADELPHIA (4/30/04) - The Saint Joseph's University Hawks downed the Colonials of George Washington University on Finnesey Field by a score of 14-13. On senior day, it was St. Joe's senior Kristen Teklinsky who led the way for the Hawks with five goals and two assists. Sophomore Kerry O'Connell also contributed five tallies for the victorious Hawks. Teklinsky's seven points in the game moved her into a tie for second all-time with 144 career points for the Hawks. The win improved Saint Joseph's record to 8-5 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington dropped to 8-9 and 3-4 in the conference.
The Hawks fell behind early after George Washington scored three unanswered goals less than eight minutes into the game. O'Connell and Teklinsky finally got St. Joe's on the board when they each scored a goal to cut the deficit to 3-2. George Washington answered with a goal to increase there lead, but Teklinsky and O'Connell each scored their second goals of the game, and junior Shannon Scott scored for the first time to give St. Joe's a 5-4 advantage midway through the first half. However, moments later the Colonials tied the game at 5-5 when Laura Hostetler found the back of the net for her first goal of the game. But once again, Saint Joseph's would rally to score three times on Scott's second goal and tallies by seniors Amie Schmoltze and Megan Gresh to take an 8-5 lead into the half. St. Joe's picked up right where they left off when Kristen Teklinsky and Kerry O'Connell each scored for the third time to puck the Hawks ahead by a score of 10-5. George Washington would rally and score four times, but O'Connell scored two more times to give the Hawks a 12-9 advantage. George Washington bounced back once again with two goals by Colleen Schmidt to cut the Hawk's lead to 12-11. Teklinsky would then score her fourth and fifth goals of the game to close out the scoring for Saint Joseph's and give the Hawks a 14-11 edge with 1:36 remaining in the game. George Washington rallied to score two late goals to make the final score 14-13 in favor of the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's closes out the regular season on the road, with a game against the Richmond Spiders on Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. |
