WOMEN'S LACROSSE FALLS AT DUQUESNE, 11-9
PITTSBURGH, PA (4/25/04) -- SJU took a 4-3 lead into the half but couldn't hold off the Atlantic 10's top team in an 11-9 loss at Duquesne on Sunday. It was the second straight A-10 loss for SJU, who drops to 6-5, 1-4. The Dukes improve to 11-3, 5-1. Senior Kristen Teklinsky had four goals for the third straight game and sophomore Kerry O'Connell had three goals. Junior Courtney Huff boasted 17 saves on the day to lead the game.
DU's Becca West opened the game with a free position goal just :50 into play before the Hawks went on a 4-0 scoring drive to take a 4-1 edge with 12:35 off the clock. Duquesne saw an end to a 21-minute scoring draught as Kelly Shaw scored a free position goal at 21:16 followed by a Tamasitis goal from Flocco at 22:49 for the 3-4 half time score. After a 30-minute lightening delay, Teklinsky scored an unassisted goal for a 5-3 cushion, but the Dukes came on strong getting goals from Jennifer Lorenze, App and Flocco over a the next two minutes for a 6-5 lead for the Red & Blue. SJU even the contest at 6-6 as Teklinsky hit an unassisted goal at 9:10, but DU followed that up with three scored (Flocco, Mulford, App) for a 9-6 advantage in the 17th minute. The Hawks closed the game to a 9-8 reach with back-to-back goals at the 21:29 mark, before Mulford's insurance goal at 23:01 gave DU a 10-8 edge. O'Connell netted her final goal of the game at 25:14, but Tamasitis scored from App at 25:40 for the 11-9 final. Four Dukes found the back of the cage twice in Ginger Flocco, Kelly Mulford, Laura App and Courtney Tamasitis. App and Flocco each added an assist to tie the team lead with three points. Flocco and App each won five draws as well while Tamasitis scooped-up five groundballs. The Dukes out-shot the Hawks 39-15 for the contest and won 15 draws to SJU's eight.
