STRONG SECOND HALF PROPELS HAWKS PAST LEHIGH, 9-3
PHILADELPHIA (4/20/04) - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team used a scoring outburst in the second half to secure their third straight win, a 9-3 decision over Lehigh. Senior Kristen Teklinsky tallied four goals for the Hawks, while junior Shannon Scott chipped in three tallies. The win improves the Hawks record to 6-3, while Lehigh dropped to 5-9.
Lehigh's Emily Studdiford scored first, 15 minutes into what would be a low scoring first half. The Hawks would respond on the strength of Teklinsky's first two goals. Lehigh would score again to send the game into halftime tied 2-2.
The second half started with tallies by both teams before momentum began to shift in favor of the Hawks. Over the next six minutes, Saint Joseph's scored four unanswered goals, one each by Teklinsky, Scott, sophmore Kerry O'Connell, and senior Megan Gresh, to push the lead to 7-3.
The Hawks tenacious defense secured the win by shutting out Lehigh's offense over the final 21 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Courtney Huff played strong in goal with 13 saves in between the pipes.
Studdiford carried the Mountain Hawks with three goals, while Kyle Begina made 15 saves in the goal.
With tonight's performance, Teklinsky moved into third place on the all-time scoring list, passing Margot Grant '97, current assistant coach Jessica (Huffman) Blake '95, and Shannon Hungate '03 in one night. Teklinsky now has 122 points and is 22 from tying Bernadette Smith '01 for second place. Teklinsky is also third in goals scored (97) and tied for sixth in assists (25).
St. Joe's looks to extend its program record tying three-game winning streak on Finnesey Field for an Atlantic 10 showdown with Massachusetts on Friday at 4 pm.
