SJU DEFEATS WAGNER, 9-7, BEHIND SCHMOLTZE'S HAT TRICK

STATEN ISLAND, NY (3/28/04) -- Senior Amie Schmoltze recorded a hat-trick to lead Saint Joseph's to its second straight win with a 9-7 victory at Wagner. SJU improves to 3-1 overall, while the Seahawks drop to 0-8. The Hawks put the Seahawks in the hole early, scoring six unanswered goals by five different players. The surge was led by sophomore Lindsay Brown who scored two goals while seniors Kristin Teklinsky, Amie Schmoltze, junior Shannon Scott and sophomore Kerry O'Connell all added one apiece. The Seahawks first goal came from sophomore Heather George with 14:40 remaining in the first half, but the Hawks would answer with one more goal by Scholtze to close out the quarter, 7-1. Entering the second half, junior Leann Matta and sophomore Darby Biggart both scored for the Seahawks early on in the half. Schmoltze would score once more at 15:00 to tally three goals on the day. The Seahawks still showed life when freshman Breanna Burgess and Biggart added two more goals to cut the lead to 8-5. With 18:00 remaining O'Connell would increase their lead to four by chipping in a goal. The Seahawks would end all scoring on the day with two goals by George, the last coming with 9:30 remaining in the game. Defensively for the Seahawks junior goalie Erica Brown grabbed 10 saves in the loss. For the Hawks, junior goalie Courtney Huff netted five.
