RICHMOND TOPS SJU, 18-8

RICHMOND, VA (4/26/02) - Senior Carrie Aitken tallied six goals and sophomore Polly Purcell added four goals and three assists to lead the host Richmond to an 18-8 win over Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at President's Field. The tandem of Purcell and junior Kristy Gallagher combined on the first two scores less than 3:30 into the contest. Gallagher's score from four yards out at the 3:24 mark gave UR a 2-0 advantage. The Hawks soared back, as junior Lauren Foley got SJU on the scoreboard off a pass by sophomore Kristin Teklinsky. Then junior Brett Dymarczyk knotted the score at two less than five minutes into the contest. The score see-sawed as St. Joe's creeped to within one, 4-3 after a Foley bullet at the 14:02 mark. Richmond responded by scoring eight of the games next nine goals, the only interruption a tally by junior Kelly Butler, to take a 12-4 lead at intermission. Aitken, who celebrated her Senior Day by becoming the Spiders all-time leading goal scorer (125), scored the final three of the half. Hawk freshman Shannon Scott scored the first goal of the second stanza, but that would be as close as the visitors would come. Richmond scored the next four goals to virtually seal the win. The two teams then traded goals the remainder of the contest with Scott, Dymarczyk and senior Anne Blank tallying for SJU. Junior Courtney Huff stopped 16 shots in goal for SJU, which fell to 2-10, 1-5 in A-10 play. Richmond improves to 11-5, 6-1. The Hawks will host St. Bonaventure on Sunday in the regular season finale (noon). Seniors Anne Blank, Katie Helder, Melissa Hieber and Maura McNamara will be honored in Senior Day ceremonies.
