LA SALLE EDGES SJU, 12-7 IN A-10 OPENER

PHILADELPHIA (4/03/02) - Senior Jamie Wilus scored seven goals and assisted on three others as La Salle defeated Saint Joseph's on Finnesey Field, 12-7. Today's game was the Atlantic 10 conference opener for both teams. Wilus scored three of her goals in the first 14 minutes en route to the win. Sophomore Kristin Teklinsky led the way for the Hawks, (1-5) with two goals. The Crimson and Grey jumped out to an early start after senior Maura McNamara found the back of the net at the three minute mark. Wilus answered off an assist from Jennifer Blaney to tie the game 1-1. Junior Shannon Hungate responded two minutes later to push the Hawks' lead to one. Wilus then went on a scoring spree, blasting the next three goals into the back of the Hawk net to capture the lead. SJU would score two goals before the end of the half but La Salle retaliated with the same number to maintain a 6-4 at intermission. La Salle opened up the second half with much of the same, scoring four consecutive goals before allowing Teklinsky to get open and blast the ball into the back of the net. Freshman Michelle Van Wert assisted in the goal. Wilus than scored her seventh goal of the afternoon two minutes later. Saint Joseph's notched two more goals before the end of the game to cut the La Salle lead to five but it wasn't enough as the Explorers, now 3-3, defeated the Hawks for a final tally 12-7.
