Hawks Fall to UMass, 14-8

PHILADELPHIA, PA - SJU got four goals, including the 100th of her career, from Bernadette Smith but it was not enough as the Hawks fell to Massachusetts, 14-8, Friday afternoon. Shannon Hungate scored a goal and four assists for the Hawks while Rachel Ingraffea and Jada Emery tallied three goals each for the Minutewomen. SJU (3-5, 0-1) drew first blood at the 26:14 mark to take a 1-0 lead but Massachusetts answered with five straight goals to make it a 5-1 game with 17 minutes remaining in the half. The Hawks rallied back with three goals in a two minute span to come to within one, 5-4. The two teams would then trade goals for the rest of the half as UMass took a 6-5 lead after the first stanza. Massachusetts (2-6, 1-0) scored less than a minute into the second half to take a 7-5 lead but SJU responded two minutes later to cut the UMass lead in half. Massachusetts would prove to be too strong as they scored seven of the next nine goals to seal the 14-8 victory. Massachusetts goalkeeper Jen Nardi posted 12 saves while Lauren Bradley turned back 10 shots in the loss.
