Hawks Routed By Lafayette, 17-7

PHILADELPHIA (4/3/01) - Lafayette College got nine goals, including seven in the first half, from Heather McLelland as the Mountain Hawks routed St. Joseph's, 17-7, in women's lacrosse action Tuesday night. McClelland scored a natural hat trick seven minutes into the game as Lafayette jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Hawks did not score until the 19:56 mark and cut the lead to 6-2 with 13 minutes left in the first half. Lafayette would then score five more times before intermission, making the score, 11-3, at the half. Lafayette (6-3) scored three straight goals to open the second half, taking a 14-3 lead with 25 minutes left to play in the game. The Hawks (3-4) showed some life, responding with two straight goals to cut the lead to 14-5 but Lafayette scored three of the next five goals to seal the 17-7 victory. SJU, who was playing without the services of starting attacker, Brett Dymarczyk, who is out with a broken jaw, managed only 12 shots while Lafayette had 26. Freshman Kris Teklinsky and senior Bernadette Smith each scored two goals for the Hawks while Shannon Hungate dished out two assists.. Erin Gallagher and Jodi Spector added two goals for Lafayette. The Hawks open up Atlantic 10 play when they host Massachusetts on Friday, April 6 at 4pm.
