HAWKS BOOST RECORD TO 3-0 WITH 10-9 WIN OVER LEHIGH

BETHLEHEM, PA (03/23/01) - Hawk Athlete of the Week Bernadette Smith continued her hot hand, tallying a game-high five goals and dished one assist to lead the St. Joseph's women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over host Lehigh. The Hawks, which won its third straight to open the season a perfect 3-0 for the best start in school history, jumped out to a 6-2 halftime lead as Smith tallied a natural hat trick in a three-minute span during the opening stanza. The Mountain Hawks (1-4) rallied back with three quick goals of their own to close the gap. Lehigh cut the margin to 10-8 on a goal by Ella Studdiford with 2:38 remaining. The final tally came with 17 seconds by Lehigh's Kristin Strom, but SJU held on for the win. Amie Schmoltze (two goals), Jen Enoch (one goal), Brett Dymarczyk (one goal/one assist), Shannon Hungate (one goal/one assist), Annie Blank (one assist) rounded out the scoring for SJU. Lauren Bradley had seven saves for SJU while Vanessa Abbott recorded eight for Lehigh. The Hawks host California on Sunday at Noon.
