2000 Year in Review
The St. Joseph's University women's lacrosse
team started off the new millennium with a
bang. Despite finishing a tad below .500, the
Hawks had one of their best seasons since
1996. Junior Bernadette Smith earned Atlantic
10 All-Conference honors while freshman
Shannon Hungate was tabbed co-Rookie of
the Year. In addition, Hungate was named
Atlantic 10 Rookie of the week twice as was
fellow freshman Brett Dymarczyk.
The Hawks were led by Hungate's 53 points.
The attacker set a new single season record
with six assists in one game while tying the
record for points scored in a game (11). Her 53
points are the most ever by a freshman. Smith,
SJU's Most Outstanding Offensive Player, had
her best season yet, notching a team high 43
goals and finishing second on the team with 49
points. Dymarczyk had an impressive rookie
campaign tallying 28 goals while finishing third
on the team with 33 points.
Seniors Cara Sweeney, Lauren Cameron,
and Donna Burke had solid seasons in 2000.
Sweeney netted 15 goals and dished out eight
assists while Cameron tallied 13 goals and
seven assists. Burke dished out 12 assists
while scoring four goals.
Defensively, the Hawks were led by a trio of sophomores, Melissa
Hieber, Anne Blank, and Katie Helder. Hieber was named SJU's
MVP after tallying six goals and four assists while causing a team high
25 turnovers. Blank netted six goals and dished out two assists while
Helder found the back of the net twice. Blank and Helder earned
Academic All-Conference honors for their efforts off the field.
Despite a 2-4 record in Atlantic 10 play, the Hawks got quality wins over
city rivals La Salle, Drexel and Villanova as well as Lehigh and Marist.
