Women's Lacrosse Downs Lehigh 13-12 In Overtime
March 19, 2005 BETHLEHEM, PA - Trailing by one late, Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse attacker Kerry O'Connell took control of the game, tying the game with 23 seconds and tallying the game-winner in overtime. After giving up two late goals to Lehigh, the Hawks found themselves trailing 11-10 with just over a minute remaining. Saint Joseph's got control of the ball and Lindsay Brown found O'Connell open for the game-tying goal with 23 seconds remaining. Both teams failed to score in the final seconds, forcing overtime. Freshman Lindsey-Kate McCOOL tallied the go-ahead goal for the Hawks with 1:16 remaining. Lehigh responded as Barrie Cominsky scored 12 seconds later to tie the game at 12. Thankfully for the Hawks, O'Connell tallied the final goal, as Saint Joseph's held on to win 13-12. In the first half, both teams scored in spurts, as Lehigh jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before the Hawks tied it at two. Each squad wi=ould tally two goals apiece before Lehigh scored the final two goals of the first half to take a 6-4 lead into halftime. Despite giving up the first goal of the second half, Saint Joseph's fought back with three consecutive goals to tie the game at seven on one of O'Connell's game-high five goals. Lehigh regained the lead again, scoring the next two goals to take a 9-7 lead. Saint Joseph's responded with three goals to take a 10-9 edge before the thrilling final two minutes. For the game, Lehigh outshot the Hawks 26-21, with SJU's Courtney Huff making 10 saves between the pipes. O'Connell paced Saint Joseph's with five goals and added an assist. McCool recorded four goals and two assists for six points on the day, while Jenny Egan added two goals.
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 2-1 on the season, while Lehigh falls to 3-4. The Hawks return to action Tuesday when they host Lafayette at 6 p.m. |
