HAWKS UPEND TEMPLE, 2-1, SECURE #3 SEED AT A-10 FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS
PHILADELPHIA (11/01/03) - Sophomore Katelyn O'Brien scored the game-winner with 4:30 left in regulation and junior goalkeeper Courtney Huff turned away 21 shots to lift the Saint Joseph's field hockey team (7-10, 3-3 A-10) to a 2-1 victory over Temple (10-10, 4-2 A-10) on Geasey Field in the regular season finale for both schools. The victory helped Saint Joseph's secure the # 3 seed in next weekend's Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Championships and sets up a rematch between the teams in the tournament's semifinals on Friday at 2:00 PM.
After a scoreless first half, SJU freshman Lauren Luft tallied the game's first goal with 12:04 remaining in the second half off a pass from O' Brien.
The Hawks' lead was short-lived, however, as Temple's Lindsay Holman followed just over two minutes later with an unassisted goal to tie the score at 1-1 with 10:06 left.
O'Brien lifted the game-winner into the cage with 4:30 left off a pass from freshman Nicole Antonini to give the Crimson and Gray the win.
Huff was virtually unpenetrable in the cage, registering 21 stops, including several late to preserve the win. TU goalie Erin Conroy had 12 saves in a losing effort.
Temple out-shot Saint Joseph's 30-17, and held an advantage in penalty corners, 20-3.
The Owls clinched the #2 seed in the A-10 Field Hockey Championships, and take on the host Hawks in Friday's second semifinal. Richmond, the top seed, will take on # 4 seed West Chester at noon.
