LUFT LIFTS FIELD HOCKEY OVER WEST CHESTER IN OT, 2-1
PHILADELPHIA (10/18/03) - Freshman forward Lauren Luft scored on a breakaway 3:21 into overtime to give Saint Joseph's (5-9, 1-2 A-10) a 2-1 victory over West Chester (3-9, 0-2 A-10) in Atlantic 10 field hockey action on Finnesey Field. It was SJU's fifth overtime game of the season and the eleventh decided by one goal.
A fairly evenly played match, neither team could muster much offensive pressure. Luft delivered the equalizer when a she picked up the ball at midfield and outraced the opposing defense down the field. She then slipped the ball under Ram goale Carrie Hanshue, who came out to cut down the angle, and directed the ball into the open cage.
The two teams traded goals on penalty corners just over six minutes apart in the opening frame. WCU netted the first goal of the game at the 16:55 mark when senior Kendra Wood scored. Sophomore Jen McGinley and senior Liz Morrow had assists.
The Hawks responded with a tally several minutes later as Amie Schmoltze knocked home her second goal of the year to even the score. Freshman Nicole Antonini and junior Shannon Scott picked up the assists.
WCU held a slim edge in shots 6-5 and both teams had three penalty corners apiece. SJU netminder Courtney Huff registered four saves in goal, Hanshue had one stop for the Rams.
SJU closes out the home portion of its slate and celebrates senior day, when it hosts La Salle at 3:00 PM.
