UMASS DEFEATS HAWKS IN FIELD HOCKEY, 2-1
AMHERST, MA (10/12/03) - Saint Joseph's (4-9, 0-2 A-10) tallied a second half goal, but it wasn't enough to rally past Massachuestts (3-10, 1-1 A-10), falling, 2-1, in an Atlantic 10 field hockey game on a cool and damp Garber Field.
Trailing 2-0, SJU got on the board at the 61:58 mark when sophomore Katelyn O'Brien received the ball just on the UMass side of the field and fed a long pass to freshman Lauren Luft. Luft then drew UMass goalkeeper Christine Tocco out of the goal and was able to get the ball around her and net her second goal of the season.
SJU had a chance to tie the game late, but O'Brien's shot off a penalty corner was stopped by Tocco.
The Minutewomen got on the board first at the 9:09 mark of the opening half. Senior Kristin Hopwood fed a pass into sophomore Katelyn Woolfrey on a penalty corner. Woolfrey faked a shot and then passed to Gina Sanders who ripped a shot past Hawk goalkeeper Courtney Huff.
Saint Joseph's had its best scoring opportunity of the first half when O'Brien stole a pass deep in the Minutewomen zone and sent freshman Nicole Antonini in alone, but she whistled a shot wide of the cage.
Down 1-0 at intermission, Antonini had a golden opportunity to tie the game at the 17:41 mark of the second half but her shot off a penalty corner was saved by Tocco.
UMass took a 2-0 lead at the 43:08 mark when sophomore Jaime Bawden scored at the 43:08 mark and it turned out to be the game-winner.
Massachusetts out-shot Saint Joseph's, 14-12 in the game and held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners. Tocco and Huff each made six saves.
The Hawks return to the field hosting a pair of critical A-10 games against West Chester on Saturday and La Salle on Sunday.
