FIELD HOCKEY FALLS AT VILLANOVA, 2-0

VILLANOVA, PA (10/04/03) - A pair of second half goals by VIllanova (6-5) lifted the Wildcats to a 2-0 victory over Saint Joseph's (3-7) in field hockey action at Villanova Stadium. The game was scoreless through the first 44 minutes of play, as both teams struggled to mount an offensive attack. There were only seven shots and three penalty corners in a sloppy first half that saw several players fall due to the wet turf. But the 'Cats came out strong after halftime, and they took the lead for good off a penalty corner with 26:10 remaining in the contest. Vanessa Pizzulli set up an opportunity for Leah Lisausky, who drove the ball near the goal, where freshman forward Sara Schmidt knocked it in for her second goal of the season. The 'Cats registered 10 second half shots, out shooting St. Joe's by a 14-6 margin for the day. Freshman Erin Scott tallied four saves, and sophomore back Stephanie Grejtak made a defensive save in the second half to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard. Sophomore forward Casey Whalen put the Hawks away with 6:15 remaining in the game. Classmate Sarah Francis fired a pass into the center of the circle, and Whalen drove it into the back of the net. SJU returns to the Finnesey Field turf on Tueday against Rutgers.
