FIELD HOCKEY FALTERS AT FAIRFIELD, FALLS 2-1

FAIRFIELD, CONN. (9/28/03) - The Saint Joseph's field hockey team continued to be snake-bit, dropping a 2-1 decision at Fairfield on a rain-soaked University Field. With the win, the Stags snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 4-7 while the Hawks lost their fourth straight game falling to 3-5. Fairfield opened the scoring fourteen minutes into the contest as junior Andrea Caputa scored off a pass from senior Kristen Keleher. The Stags added what would prove to be the game-winner with 25:16 left in the contest as freshman Nicole Mazzocchi tipped a shot by Keleher to make the score 2-0. St. Joe's Julie Lentz scored off a pass from Lauren Luft with just under 18 minutes left in the game, but the Hawks were unable to score an equalizer. Stags senior goaltender Lauren Thomas made seven saves while SJU's Courtney Huff stopped two and Jill Stracko stopped one shot. SJU next takes to the field on Wednesday against American at Delaware. The two teams will play the final 29 minutes of their season opener that was suspended due to inclement weather with AU ahead 2-0.
