HUFF'S HEROICS NOT ENOUGH FOR FIELD HOCKEY AT LAFAYETTE
EASTON, PA (9/24/03) - A school record 27 saves by junior goalkeeper Courtney Huff were not enough to salvage a victory as the Saint Joseph's field hockey team (3-4) dropped a dramatic 2-1 overtime decision to Lafayette (6-4) at Rappolt Field.
The Crimson and Gray stunned the Leopards with an early first half goal by freshman' Nicole Antonini, her sixth of the season.
Lafayette then turned up the pressure, breaking through when Meredith Hahn caught a rebound from her own shot and got the ball past Huff to score with 25:20 left in the second half.
Lafayette dominated the game, outshooting the Hawks 41-14. Huff, however was almost unstoppable, making 27 saves in the game. That total eclipsed the previous mark of 22 set by Andreanna Mevoli against Syracuse in 1997 and matched by Lauren Bradley versus Villanova in 2002.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 until LC senior Jennifer Stone scored the game-winning goal to lift the Leopards to the victory. Stone was strong the entire game, leading all players with 17 total shots. She finally slipped the game-winner into the cage with 13:18 left in the overtime period.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday at Fairfield.
