FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO RICHMOND IN A-10 SEMIS

RICHMOND, VA (11/08/02) - Top seeded Richmond scored during a scrum following a penalty corner with 3:11 left in regulation to defeat Saint Joseph's, 1-0, in an Atlantic 10 field hockey semifinal on Crenshaw Field. The Hawks finish the season 9-9 overall, while the Spiders (15-6) advance to Saturday's A-10 title game at 1:00 PM. Controling play for much of the game, UR finally converted late in the contest. Changing directions on a penalty corner, Spider junior Brittney Parrish centered a pass to senior Meliss Yuppa, who knocked into the goal. SJU could not muster a scoring opportunity in the game's final minutes. The Crimson and Gray averted danger earlier in the second half, when Richmond junior Lydia DeCembrino pushed a stroke opportunity wide with 11:10 left in the half. Like the season's earlier meeting between the two schools, neither squad was able to establish control in the opening half of play. The game was scoreless at intermission. The contest marked the final game for five Hawk seniors, Kelly Butler, Aly Dankovitch, Brett Dymarczyk, Natasha Pronga and Kathy Sokalski. The match was also the final contest for Hawk head coach Joan Broderick. Broderick, completing her fifth season at SJU and 16th as a head coach, will retire in the offseason. Broderick has compiled a 147-140-12 mark during her career.
