HAWKS KEEP POSTSEASON HOPES ALIVE WITH 3-1 WIN OVER URI

PHILADELPHIA (10/27/02) - Playing for their postseason lives, the Saint Joseph's field hockey team's upperclassmen stepped up their play, propelling SJU to a 3-1 win over Rhode Island on Finnesey Field. Hawk senior Kelly Butler scored a pair of goals and assisted on the gamewinner, as SJU improved to 7-8, 1-3 A-10, while URI fell to 1-15, 1-4 A-10. Rhode Island shocked the Hawks with a goal on a corner by sophomore Theresa Castellone in the opening four minutes. SJU, however, recovered and controlled play for much of the remainder of the contest. Butler equalized the game at 1-1, when she blasted a shot toward the far post with 8:42 remaining in the first half that deflected into cage off the stick of a Ram defensive player. The game remained tied until SJU junior Amie Schmoltze blasted home the game-winner off a direct corner 18:34 into the second half. Butler and fellow senior Aly Dankovitch collected the assists on the play. Butler then iced the game in the 66th minute of play, tapping in a cross from junior Kristen Teklinsky in at the far post to make the final margin 3-1. SJU dominated play, outshooting URI 21-9, including 14-2 in the second half, and holding a 13-7 edge in penalty corners. In goal, the Rams' Danielle Dangoia made 12 saves, while the Hawks' Courtney Huff turned aside five shots. SJU must win its remaining two regular season games at La Salle on Wednesday (2:30 PM) and against Temple on Saturday (Noon) if it hopes to secure an A-10 playoff berth.
