UMASS EDGES SJU IN A-10 FIELD HOCKEY
PHILADELPHIA (10/26/02) - Saint Joseph's senior Kathy Sokalski banged home a rebound early in the second half to tie a closely contested Atlantic 10 field hockey game between SJU and Massachusetts at 1-1. UMass sophomore Adrianne Monaco, however, redirected a long hit from outside the circle into the cage with 7:33 left in regulation to propel the Minutewomen to a 2-1 victory on Finnesey Field. With the loss, SJU slipped to 6-8 overall, 0-3 in the A-10, while UM improved to 3-15, 3-1 A-10.
UMass jumped on the board early, scoring on their first shot of the game. Senior Sarah Bohonowicz drilled a penalty corner into the cage off assists from senior Sue Jackson and Monaco.
Sokalski then tied the game in the 41st minute. She swatted in a loose ball in front of the cage off a rebound of a shot by junior Kristen Teklinsky.
Monaco knocked in the game-winner with just 7:33 left in regulation. An unusual play, a seemingly harmless long ball was played from outside the circle, when Monaco slipped into the mix, tapping the ball, which ricocheted off Hawk goalkeeper Courtney Huff and defender Angela Hanna before trickling into the net.
Huff played well in goal for SJU, turning aside 8 shots, while UMass netminder Ashley Egland made four stops. The Minutewomen outshot SJU, 16-8, and held the edge in penalty corners, 10-4.
The Hawks host a pivotal A-10 game tomorrow, when URI pays a visit to Hawk Hill (11:00 AM).
