DREXEL SLIPS BY SJU IN FIELD HOCKEY, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA (10/23/02) - Drexel freshman Elizabeth Seidel redirected a shot from senior Kristina Backenstose on a penalty corner into the back of the net with 9:02 left in regulation, propelling the Dragons' field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's on Finnesey Field. With the win DU crept above the .500 mark at 8-7, while SJU slipped a notch below at at 6-7 overall. A fairly evenly played match on a cold fall evening, Drexel outshot the Hawks 10-7 and both DU goalkeeper Katie Dougherty and her counterpart, SJU's Courtney Huff, made five saves. Drexel, however held a commanding edge in penalty corners, 10-3. SJU was forced to use a relatively inexperienced lineup with a pair of seniors, Aly Dankovitch and Brett Dymarczyk, out of the lineup. Dankovitch missed the game after receiving a red card in Saturday's game with Richmond, while Dymarczyk sat out with an injury. The defeat was the Hawks third straight to their crosstown rivals, but SJU still holds an edge in the all-time series 13-8-4. The Hawks host a pair of pivotal Atlantic 10 Conference games this weekend, as Massachusetts (Saturday, Noon) and Rhode Island (Sunday, 11:00 AM)pay a visit to SJU.
