BIG SECOND HALF SPURS SPIDERS PAST SJU FIELD HOCKEY TEAM

PHILADELPHIA (10/19/02) - Richmond erupted for three second half goals, including a pair while the Hawks played short-handed, to defeat the Saint Joseph's field hockey team on Finnesey Field, 3-0. With the victory UR improved to 9-6 overall, 2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while the Crimson and Gray fell to 6-6, 0-2 A-10. Following an uneventful opening half, play opened up in the second stanza when the Spiders scored just 3:46 into the period. Sophomore knocked in a pass from senior Kristin Gavin on a penalty corner. Tensions in the game rose over the next ten minutes and SJU was dealt a setback when senior Aly Dankovitch was sent off with a red card in the 54th minute. The card resulted in the Hawks playing short-handed for the game's final 18:38. Up a player, Richmond junior Brittney Parrish added a pair of goals to break open the game. Her first tally came on the rebound of a penalty corner at the 20:38 mark of the second half, while the second was a tap-in off a pass from senior Melissa Yuppa on a break-away with under five minutes to play in regulation. For the game UR out shot SJU 7-6, but the Spiders held a commanding edge in corners, 8-1. Richmond freshman Michelle Swartz stopped four shots to earn the shutout, her counterpart, SJU's Courtney Huff, turned made three stops. The Hawks stay at home this week, continuing a four game homestand with game's against Drexel (Wednesday), Massachusetts (Saturday) and Rhode Island (Sunday).
