SJU DUMPS FAIRFIELD IN 2OT TO END SKID
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (09/29/02) - Senior Brett Dymarczyk knocked home the rebound of her own shot 1:08 into the second overtime period, lifting the Saint Joseph's field hockey team (4-4) to a 1-0 victory over visiting Fairfield (3-6) on FInnesey Field. The victory snapped a three game losing streak for SJU, while the Stags lost for the sixth time in their last seven outings.
After an uneventful opening half, the Crimson and Gray seized control of the game in the second half. Peppering the Fairfield cage, SJU outshot the Stags 14-3 in the second half and held a 12-3 edge in penalty corners in the period. FU, however managed to withstand the barrage and force overtime.
The opening overtime period featured more of the same, as SJU dominated possession, but was unable to break through for a goal. Dymarczyk finally ended it just over a minute into the second overtime. After pushing off the Hawks' 18th corner of the game, Dymarczyk received a pass on the low block. FU goalkeeper Lauren Thomas snuffed out the first attempt, but could block the rebound, which Dymarczk banged into the cage.
The Crimson and Gray outshot Fairfield 24-7 for the game and maintained an 18-6 advantage in corners. Hawk netminder Courtney Huff needed to make just three saves to earn her second career shutout. Her counterpart, Thomas made nine stops in a losing effort.
SJU now holds a 12-1 lead in the all-time series against its fellow Jesuit rival.
The Hawks return to the FInnesey turf on Sunday, October 6 against Villanova at 3:00 PM.
