HAWKS FALTER AGAINST #7 PENN STATE

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (09/21/02) - A pair of late first half goals swung the momentum of a closely contested contst in favor of Penn State and the seventh-ranked Lions (6-0) pulled away for a 7-1 victory over Saint Joseph's (3-2) on Finessey Field. Senior Kathy Sokalski tallied the the lone goal for SJU, briefly tying the game at 1-1 in the first half. Playing with a high level of energy, SJU surprised PSU with some pressure early in the match. Penn State, however, jumped on the board on a goal by senior Kelly Concini, which deflected into the cage off the stick of a Hawk defender at the 14:59 mark. Sokalski, however, equalized the game less than five minutes later. She knocked in a cross from junior Kristen Teklinsky to tie the score at one apiece with 11:20 remaining before intermission. Two late goals by the Lions changed the flow of the contest as PSU took charge. Senior Kate Bender drove home the first tally with just over five minutes to go and sophomore Mary Schaefer converted a penalty stroke in the final minute to make it a 3-1 game at halftime. SJU ran out of steam in the second half, as Penn State tallied four goals in the match's final 20 minutes. Sophomore Karin Grap accounted for three of the goals, while junior Timarie Legel added the remaining goal. PSU out shot SJU 21-4 in the game. Hawk netminder Courtney Huff made ten saves in a losing effort, while the Lion's Annie Zinkavich made three stops. The Hawks return to the field on Wednesday when the squad hosts Lafayette at 7:00 PM.
