BRADLEY SETS CAREER SAVE MARK AS SJU BLANKS LA SALLE, 3-0
PHILADELPHIA (10/27/01) - Senior Lauren Bradley posted her fifth shutout of the season, and broke the school record for saves in a career to lead the Saint Joseph's field hockey team to a 3-0 win over La Salle on Finnesey Field Saturday afternoon.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak and virtually insured the Hawks a spot in the four-team Atlantic 10 Tournament to be held at Temple next Saturday and Sunday.
"The record is nice, but the most important this is that we won the game today and put ourselves in good shape for the playoffs," stated Bradley on her milestone. "Most importantly, this is a record that is shared with my teammates, especially my defenders who have been outstanding over the past three years."
"Terrific story, as a walk-on, she did not play much her freshman year, but she kept at it," said head coach Joan Broderick on Bradley. "A story of maturing and deciding what she wanted to do. She deserves all accolcades this year. She is definitely our rock this year."
The Hawks started the game strong, dominating the first 10 minutes and forcing four corners and taking two shots on goal. La Salle, however, regrouped and played even the final 25 minutes of the first half to keep the match scoreless at intermission.
The second half was a different story as it was all SJU. The Hawks pressured La Salle goalkeeper Colleen Bolger (11 saves) from the start, finally breaking the deadlock on a penalty stroke by junior Kelly Butler with 21:54 remaining. Butler later followed with a second goal off a nice pass in the box from Kristen Teklinsky at the 13:56 mark. Junior Kathy Sokalski, who had a game-high seven shots on goal, made it 3-0 with 4:16 to play off a rebound.
"After a tentative first half we finally relaxed and played our style of game, it is nice to see Kathy Sokalski score a goal and get off the schnide," stated Broderick following the win.
"She is the little engine that could," added Broderick on Butler, "She is always there. She never quits and is always in the right spot at the right time."
SJU, 9-8, 3-2 in A-10 play, hosts West Chester on Sunday (10/28, 3:00 PM) in its final regular season game. It is also Senior Day on Hawk Hill and SJU seniors Bradley and defender Katie Helder, both three-year starters, will be honored prior to the match.
