SJU LOSES ANOTHER TOUGH MATCH, 2-1, TO URI

KINGSTON, RI (10/21/01) Sophomore goalie Danielle Dangoia stoned four of five Saint Joseph's players in a strokeoff while Desire Miller and Jess Weber converted for Rhode Island to lead the Rams to a 2-1 win over visiting SJU in Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey action on Sunday. Dangoia stopped the first three SJU penalty strokes while Miller and Weber gave the Rams (5-11, 2-3) a formidable 2-0 lead with two rounds to go. Junior back Natasha Pronga kept Saint Joseph's alive by converting in the fourth round, but Dangoia clinched the win by stopping the fifth and final Hawk shooter. Miller, who led off for Rhode Island, atoned for missing a penalty shot after time had expired in regulation. Rhode Island freshman Joy Hess broke a scoreless tie with her first career goal with 17:16 left in regulation, gathering in a long rebound and firing it past an off-balance SJU keeper, senior Lauren Bradley (nine saves). Saint Joseph's junior Kathy Sokalski tied the score with 8:35 to go, poking the ball past Dangoia during a scramble in front of the net. Both teams had good chances to win it during 30 minutes of sudden-death overtime. SJU junior Brett Dymarczyk hit the right post with 9:25 to go in the second OT, and Weber missed an open net for Rhode Island three minutes later. The Hawks, 8-6, 2-2, play next at Villanova on Wednesday night (7:00 PM). The team wraps up its regulat season on the Finnesey Field turf with matches against La Salle (10/27, Noon) and West Chester (10/28, 3:00 PM)
