HAWKS SURVIVE TO DEFEAT URSINUS, 1-0

COLLEGEVILLE, PA (09/9/01) - Sophomore Amie Schmoltze scored less than two minutes into the second half and the Saint Joseph's defense withstood a late flurry by Ursinus to post a 1-0 win on the road. With the victory, SJU improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Bears remained winless at 0-5. SJU, which was playing its first game of the year on natural grass, seemed slightly off in the first half and Ursinus controlled play. UC held a commanding 12-2 advantage on penalty corners and outshot the Hawks 9-3. Only a strong performance by senior netminder Lauren Bradley kept the Bears off the board. In the second half, SJU seemed to adjust to the playing surface and put immediate pressure on the Ursinus cage. Picking up several quick corner opportunities, Schmoltze was able to capitalize. She settled a push from Kathy Sokalski and then made a move toward the goal. After her first effort was thwarted, she then bulled her way past a defender and ripped a blast into the net to put SJU ahead. The goal was Schmoltze's third of the year. As the half wore on, UC regained its composure and began to control possession. The Bears nearly equalized at the 23:50 mark of the second stanza, but Bradley made an acrobatic stop of a penalty stoke to keep UC off the boards. It was the third stoke that Bradley has stopped this year. Ursinus managed a flurry of corners late, but the Hawk defense was up to the task. Bradley earned her first shutout of the season, after turning aside 14 shots. The Hawks next hit the turf on Wednesday, when the team hosts Penn State at 5:30 p.m
