UCONN ROLLS OVER FIELD HOCKEY TEAM IN SEASON OPENER

STORRS, CT (09/01/01) - The Connecticut field hockey team rolled over Saint Joseph's, 4-0, in the first game of the Morgan Stanley Husky Classic. The victory evened the Huskies record at 1-1 on the year, while SJU fell to 0-1. The Huskies struck first and quickly with a goal at the 33- minute mark of the first half from junior Kelly Stolle, assisted by sophomore Amy Marland, then added to the score at the end of the first half off a penalty corner. Freshman Lauren Henderson scored her first career goal as a Husky on the play, with assists by senior Megan Ware and sophomore Lauren Christie. UConn added two more in the second half, the first off a penalty corner and the second from Henderson for her second goal of the game and the season. Leading the Huskies on the field were senior Megan Ware with five shots and one assist and Henderson with five shots and two goals. Stolle also added two goals off four shots, and five different Huskies tallied assists for the game. For the Hawks, senior goalie Lauren Bradley tallied 13 saves, and sophomore Amie Schmoltze and junior Kelly Butler had two shots a piece. In the second game of the day, Providence College defeated Albany, 4-1. UConn will take on Albany tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex and Providence College and St. Joseph's will match up at 2 p.m.
