TEMPLE TOPS SJU, 3-1, IN SEASON FINALE

Philadelphia, PA (10/25/00) - Temple scored a pair of first half goals and tacked on a third early in the second period, helping to power the Owls to a 3-1 victory over St. Joseph's in field hockey action on Finnesey Field. Junior Katie Helder tallied the lone goal for the Hawks on a penalty stroke midway through the second stanza. Temple took control of the game in the first half scoring at the 23:35 and 12:57 marks for a 2-0 halftime advantage. The Owls outshot the Hawks in the period 8-0 and held the edge in penalty corners 5-0 at intermission. The Cherry and White tacked on an insurance goal early in the second half, when Michelle Murawski deflected a shot by Julie Martinez into the goal. St. Joseph's stepped up their level of play in period two and got on the scoreboard when Helder converted on a penalty stoke at 14:08. The stroke was awarded after a Temple defender was cited for playing the ball with her feet in front of the cage following a shot by Amie Schmoltze on a corner. The Hawks concluded the season with a record of 5-14, 0-5 in the A-10. It was the first time SJU had gone winless in League play since 1993. Just three seniors graduate, Mary Kate Brislin, Carly Pasceri and Amy Scheuren, so the future appears bright for Head Coach Joan Broderick's club.
