#9 UMASS ESCAPES WITH 1-0 OVERTIME WIN AT ST. JOSEPH'S

Philadelphia, PA (10/15/00) - Massachusetts Kristen Schmidt scored 6:20 into overtime to lift the 9th-ranked Minutewomen to a 1-0 victory over St. Joseph's in Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey action on Finnesey Field. With the win, UMass improved to 12-3 overall, 2-0 in the A-10. The Hawks, who were playing in their seventh overtime game of the year, slipped to 4-11, 0-3 in the A-10. St. Joseph's turned in a workman-like effort on defense to hold the highly-regarded Minutewomen in check. The quartet of Carly Pasceri, Mary Kate Brislin, Katie Helder and Natasha Pronga limited UMass to just 10 shots, and held 1999 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Anke Bruemmer to just 1. In goal, Lauren Bradley turned asided 6 shots, but suffered the defeat. Both team's struggled to maintain any consistent offensive pressure, relying primarily on quick counter attacks and penalty corners for opportunities. The contest was the seventh overtime game of the season for the Hawks, a school record. SJU is just 3-4 in those games. Up next, the Crimson and Gray will conclude a four-game stretch against A-10 foes at West Chester on Wenesday afternoon at 3:30 PM.
