SECOND HALF SURGE LIFTS RHODE ISLAND OVER ST. JOSEPH'S, 3-2

Philadelphia, PA (10/14/00) - Rhode Island scored three goals in a span of 5:15 of the second half to surge past St. Joseph's 3-2 in an Atlantic 10 Field Hockey matchup on Finnesey Field. The win gave the Rams a 1-0 record in A-10 play (6-8 overall), while the Hawks fell to 0-2 in the League (4-10 overall). After a scoreless first half the Hawks connected on a penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead at the 24:33 mark of the second stanza. Freshman Amie Schmoltze blasted the ball into the Ram cage for her second goal of the year. Sophomore Kathy Sokalski and senior Carly Pasceri collected the assists. With SJU on top, Rhode Island stepped up the pressure in the offensive zone and brokke through to knot the game on a penalty corner of their own with 17:06 left. Kelley Barnowski, the A-10's leading scorer, ripped home the shot with help from senior Angela Bashore and junior Marcie Bourski. Just over two minutes later, this trio again teamed up on a penalty corner to give the Rams their first lead of the game at 13:58. URI, however was not done at the offensive end. Sophomore Heather Lockhart found herself with the ball near the top of the circle, beat a defender and slapped the ball into the cage for a 3-1 URI lead. Down two goals, the Hawk's did not quit. SJU opened up the field and increased the pressure. Peppering the Ram goal, the trio of Schmoltze, Pasceri and Sokalski then sliced the deficit to 3-2, when they again connected on a penalty corner with just 3:51 remaining in regulation. URI would thwart the late Hawk rush behind the play of goalkeeper Amanda Heryla (6 saves). Her counterpart, Hawk backstop Lauren Bradley also stopped 6 shots. SJU will have little rest for the weary. The Hawks return to the Finnesey Field turf on Sunday, when they host nationally ranked Massachusetts at 2:00 PM.
