FAIRFIELD CRUISES PAST SJU, 3-0

Philadelphia, PA (10/01/00) - Keyed by three first half goals, Fairfield cruised to a 3-0 victory in field hockey action on Finnesey Field. With the Victory the Stags improved to 8-4 on the season, while the Hawks slipped to 4-8 overall. The win was the first-ever by FU in the series between the two Jesuit institutions. St. Joseph's now holds a 10-1 advantage all-time. Fairfield's leading scorer on the season, Emilie Hugenholtz did most of the damage for the Stags netting a pair of goals. Carrie Flammia also tallied for the visitors. St. Joseph's had numerous quality scoring opportunities, but clutch saves by freshman netminder Allison Brienza held SJU at bay. Several Hawks including Brett Dymarczyk, Kathy Sokalski and Erica Rossi were thwarted on the doorstep. In the second half the Cityliners stiffened defensively, holding the Stags scoreless. The Hawk offense, however, could not get on track. At one point, SJU was forced to compete a player down for more than 6 minutes after Katie Helder was issued a yellow card. SJU will now take a 10 day hiatus. The team's next game will be on Wednesday, October 11 at La Salle at 4:00 p.m.
